Bird watching

I enjoy feeding the birds and watching their antics.

Some days, however, I'm not the only one watching them.

Yesterday the female marsh hawk was hunting sparrows in the zins and agastaches.  I was hoping to get a good picture and was thrilled to catch her right on the deck railing just outside the kitchen window.

Isn't she just gorgeous?

  1. Ooooooh. I'm a chicken owner. I wouldn't be happy to see that.

    1. Marsh hawks go for smaller game (sparrows, doves, chipmunks). A chicken wouldn't be on her menu.

  2. Fantastic picture! I am surprised she landed that close to a house.

    1. Oh yes. She's usually intent on the little birds hiding in the shrub and hardly pays me no mind if I'm quiet by a window.

  3. I occasionally get hawks in my garden, too. I once had one make a sharp right turn into my Rose of Sharon after a sparrow. It was like a fighter jet. With that much speed and agility, I wasn't sure who to root for - the sparrow or the hawk.
