Bonus blooms!

Having grown 2 cukes vines up the deck gave me a surprising bonus.

The consitent watering and scheduled fertilizer produced more than just long crispy cukes.

The zins, cardinal flower and hardy hibiscus obviously shared in all that care.

I've been here since 2002 and I've NEVER had such tall plants.

The zin is over 60" and growing.

The cardinal flowers are taller than that.

And the hibiscus?  There are stalks now at 105" (nearly 9' !!).

The display is marvelous, inside and out.

I certainly don't need blinds on that bay window this time of year.  Wow.

Hey, I've posted a roundup of this year's veg harvest on the Vegetable page.  Lot's of pics....

  1. Zowie!--those are gorgeous

Also, I've been going through some of your posts on the chef's table page. You make some really great looking salads, etc.
I loved the post on the avoiding wheat update. I've had to give that up as well and 5 months later, I can't believe how much better I feel. Honestly, what the heck have they done to it that sooooo many people are having so many problems????? I switched to all organics hoping that would solve my issues, but it ended up being the wheat, organic or not. Like you, I DO miss my pizzas and breads and oh, those incredibly soft and poofy dinner rolls slathered with a ton of butter. But, I don't miss the nights spent writhing in agony. Loved your cat/dog analogy. I have yet to find anything gluten free that is GOOD.....so I'd just rather "not".

    1. They dinked with bread wheat to the point it's not fit for consumption - just easy to grow and long storage. I really like my corn chips, my rice crackers, my polenta, etc. I refuse to buy 'gluten free (fill in the blank) cookies, snacks, etc. I'll stick with my cat, thank you. Glad you are feeling better! That's what counts.

  2. When I do fertilize I do see great results. I don't understand why I can't get into a regular routine though so I go weeks without fertilizing. Your flowers look marvelous.

    1. Hi Larry. I'm like you, I like the results, don't like crawling around under tomatoes, vines, etc to scratch it into the soil. Still, I made myself do it this year 1st of every month. It's hard to argue with the results....

    1. I used GardenTone (organic) on the cukes. The flowers just helped themselves to it. LOL

    1. Well, actually, they really block my view from the sunroom! *heh* Unless I grow cukes there again next year, I don't think I'll be fertilizing them again. I usually only fertilize veg regularly and flowers only when they are initially planted. I want plants that are pretty drought tolerant and self-sufficient. Still, they ARE quite gorgeous. *sigh*
