Except for leaves .... done!

It's been another long and busy week.  I've been so busy that I can't remember what I did which day.

The beginning of the week was mild, but horribly windy.  I hate working and fighting wind at the same time.  It makes me cranky.

But a ton was done.  We've had a couple of freezes so it was time to pull the last annuals, take down the planter boxes on the long bench.  I decided to put the deck bench, planters & potting mix bin with the other benches and netting poles right along the new length of privacy fence.  Glad I don't have to to shlep so much back to the shed this way.  Stuff will do just fine up close to the house.  Easier access for earlier setup in Spring!  (A tip: always put benches or anything else with wooden feet up on boards or pavers.  It will keep the feet drier and prolong the life of the item. Luckily I have a nice supply of red cedar boards for this.)

Just the opposite of Spring - is the Polar Vortex.  Yep.  Slipping down into the states over the next 5-7 days, just in time for my birthday.  Oh yippee.

This morning it's barely above freezing.  Since yesterday we've gotten about 1.25" of cold rain and threats of snow today.  Same tomorrow.  Brrr.   Monday looks like a break before more bad weather so I should be able to bag up some more leaves then.  The sweet gums have finally started to let go.  Just hope they drop before the weather shuts me in for good.

More deer damage.    The buck(s) have broken down all the butterfly bushes.  Same with the older burning bush.  And my hemlocks!!  Drastic measure have been taken.  Money has been spent.  And a whole lot of work one day.  Check out the entire wire project on the Garden Project page.  *woof*

Now, I think, after a long week outside, more dental work for mom, and running around, I'm going to chillax in front of the TV and make up the first warm blaze in the fireplace today.  I'm pretty much tapped at this point.  Hope you all have a nice weekend.

  2. I'm having problems with the damn (and not a beaver dam!) turkeys getting into my apple trees. They're busting up all the branches going after the remains of the apples. Oh, I still have the deer chewing up everything, but this is what is occupying my thoughts right now. I am SO sick of wildlife. Really.

Hope the wire saves your hemlocks. Of course, in my world they would just mow the fencing down..........................Bas$%#&s.
    Sigh.

    1. Oh holy crap. Really? Tree turkeys? Man you canNOT catch a break. Is it legal to shot turkeys there? It's IS the season, no? Still, I don't know how I would deal with something that big that can FLY forgodsakes. When the heck are they going to develop a good Star Trek FORCE SHIELD. What the heck is the government DOing for us!!

Hope you can save some apples. And your sanity. *hugs*

    1. Oh, if only I COULD ignore them. But that's not possible, else I would lose everything. But I do what I can - and stay inside when the weather dictates. Friday was a raw day so did light the fire and got some inside chores done. Nothing like fresh hot soup to restore a soul. :-D

  4. Wow! You've done a lot of winter prep! Do you bring in your garden decorations (like little metal decorations, wind chimes, etc) if you have them?

    1. Hi Ashley. I don't have garden decorations per se. I do bring in the large wind chimes as the wind gets fierce and I don't want them bang against the house. Otherwise I've gotten away from stuff. I prefer wood, heavy metal, stone etc. for texture and design that stay put and give bones to the gardens. Do you bring in your stuff?

  5. I am envious of all you have done for winter. It is a good thing I have a farm in the country and garden likewise! No one will notice my flower beds not being tidied or my leaves resting on my too-long grass.

I may get really ambitious and mow the leaves if we get a nice sunny day.....and maybe not!

Now I am heading off the see the garden project to fight the deer......

    1. Thanks. I'm trying to keep it seasonal. The flock of birds in the tree was Cedar Waxwings. I've only ever seen them once before in my life. What a treat.
