On the move

A hemlock, that is.

Last fall I bought 6 hemlocks and just planted them along the driveway.  But the privacy fence extension will run right up to the viburnum (leftmost in top pic), so the hemlock there needed to be moved.

I always thought I stopped too short on the line of hemlocks I installed last spring between my house and the neighbor to the south.  So here it went.

Notice how pale the hemlock (that I bought in Fall) compares to the dark green of those I bought last Spring.  I hope this pale one (and the other 5 along the driveway) green up.

The fine weather continues and I'm ticking projects off the list.  The soil in the veg bed continues to be too wet to till, but the warm temps prompted me to action on another front.

  1. Hopefully those will give you some much needed privacy when they mature. :o) The little pale one might like some Ironite.

    1. The ones I'd bought in Spring from Home Depot were deep green. The ones I bought in Fall were taller, but pale. I assume they were only watered, not fertilized over the months they were on the rack. I'm using Hollytone on them.

  2. I had the same thing happen with a Lonicera, the new one was pale compared to the ones planted in the fall. It has eventually turned more of the greenish gold color it's supposed to be. Hopefully your trees will settle in and green up too.
I'm so jealous of your weather. We had a bit of a break in the rain and cold today, but it's on it's way back againe :(

    1. I'm hoping the Hollytone will catch those 6 Fall purchases back up to speed.

Yes, this weather is a) fabulous & b) really going to mess with the trees, shrubs, etc. Far far too warm. I'm afraid there will be a lot of bugs this year since the ground never froze this winter. I hope, though, you get some mild weather soon. Your place is looking so good right now. :-D

  3. Don't you hate to have to replant things. I don't think hemlock is a tree you see down here in the Ozarks. I cleaned my mower shed and found several kinds of acid additive. I need to hit my heirloom roses quickly. I can just imagine how that row of evergreens will look in a few years. I would feed them vigorously and do whatever it takes to push growth.

    1. Canadian hemlocks need cold cold winters to thrive. Good luck with those roses. :-D

  4. I moved some things around today, but not anything big. Have fun with all your projects! I was off this week, and got lots done, still there is more that needs to be done.
