Shelter from the swelter

You'd think that since I'm not outside due to the sweltering temps (over 90 with over 100 heat index) that I would spend more time on the computer posting up entries.

But no.

Heat is enervating.  I can't work outside.  I don't WANT to work inside.  So I drink iced tea and read.  (Lather.  Rinse. Repeat.)   I get stiff reading, so get up and wander around the house, looking out the windows.

Everything is is baking.  I put fresh water in the bird bath this morning.  It already looks scummy.  Plants are wilted.  Waves of heat shimmer off the asphalt driveway.  Leaves on the new crabapple trees have been turning yellow and falling the past 2 weeks.

Even the squirrels have pretty much given up trying to dig up any buried stash.  The ground is like concrete.  The heat is slowing them down, too.  One of them didn't make it across our road.  I suppose I should have been more surprised when I looked out the front window and saw the body had attracted a vulture.  Yep.  Better to just stay inside and pay for running the A/C.

Meanwhile, the heat makes my eyes feel gummy and reading doesn't make them any better.  *blink blink*

I made an effort to update the vegetable page, and now this one.  But it's just too taxing to do any more.  I'm going to head back to the couch and fire up the iPad and read some more.  Hopefully, I'll doze off.

Back when I find some motivation.... *pant*

  1. Our heat index today is supposed to be 115 with no rain in sight. Even my annual vinca were wilting. But at least all your snow/ice are gone! :o)

  2. I know what you mean about too much heat being so draining but right now, I'd risk it :}

  3. Were you hit by that storm system? We lost our patio umbrella and most of my tomato plant, but that was it.

    1. Storm? Sure, it looked promising on the radar, but we didn't get enough raindrops to connect-the-dots on the deck floor. Same with the colorful promise on the radar Saturday a.m. All we got was a quick sprinkle. Otherwise - NADA.

      Sorry you lost your umbrella. Couple years ago we had a big storm pulled up the deck umbrella, twisted it around and slammed it through the breezeway window.

      Hope you got some decent water in exchange for the 'brolly.

  4. I'm right there with ya. Hubs and I are trying to keep the trees and perennials watered, but by afternoon, it's as if we never watered at all. This is especially disappointing since the stored water is gone and we're using water we have to pay for. It would help if I could get more mulch down, but once we get things watered, it's heated up and not much time left to mulch. So, I'm harvesting things. Getting some herbs ready to dry. Saving seed where I can find it. Trying to be philosophical about it. At least after today we're not seeing any orange (indicating 100º or over)on Mesonet till July 4. We're expecting to cool off to 98º. Wow...... Sorry you lost a squirrel. I've got four or five baby cottontail bunnies I'd give ya. Heh. --Ilene

    1. I've been wondering if this year (for you) is any better than last year when it was so hot and dry. But you seem to have some actual harvest as compared to then. I'm glad to hear that.

      And you can keep those rabbits all to yourself! Hey, can I send you a herd of deer???
