Wonderful wonderful rain!

After 24 dry, hot, windy days, the weatherman finally delivered the goods.  Since this morning we've received half an inch of rain.

Last year we got 8.7 inches of rain in May.  This year only 2.65 (and that was within the first 8 days of the month).  Since then all that lush growth from the early warmth, suffered much.  *I* suffered much.  When I know we need rain and the days go by, I feel a little spring inside me tighten.  When rain does come to the general area but it refuses to fall hereabouts, the spring tightens more.  I find myself tense and irritated, seeming to channel the plants.  And good grief I have a lot of plants.

I even put off putting out the vegetables this year until May 31st - in spite of the 'lovely' weather.  After all, it's MUCH easier to keep so many plants watered while the are all sitting on the deck.

But I took a chance yesterday on the rain reaching us today, so I pulled an 11-hour day getting the vegs out, mowing/bagging & mulching, staking tomatoes, etc.   (And jeez do I feel it today!  *woof*)  I'll update the veg page soon.

Right now, I sit in the sunroom and listen to the soothing / healing drum of rain on the roof.

Wonderful, wonderful rain.  Ahhhhh.  I can finally exhale.

  1. "only" an 11 hour day? Please may I remember that next time you kick my butt about doing too much?

Hope you are feeling better today.

    1. While I don't have the stamina for the long haul you display, I do occasionally find the wherewithall to sprint now and then. But the recoup time takes much longer than it used too. Friday I was a lump, but I'm feeling a little chipper today (Saturday). :-D Don't worry though, dear, I'll always have enough oomph to "kick a butt" when it's needed. *hehe*

  2. We have lots of rain here lately, too, Kris. Really appreciate it.
    Good luck to your vegetables.

    1. Ooooh, send some of that excess rain here, Hà Xuân. We could use another couple of soakers. Are you doing any veg gardening like a couple of years back?

  3. It had been so dry here also, and even if rain is forecast or even falls in the area, it often bypasses us. It finally started Thursday night and well, boy did we ever get it! :-) It rained all night and then turned into an absolute downpour all day Friday. Stopped at the moment, but there are heavy clouds out there and rain is supposed to start again by noon. I did the final push to get all the rest of my tomatoes and peppers in on Thurs. afternoon ...I hope they don't float away!
11 hour days in the garden? Can't do that anymore. I am so proud of myself if I can do a rare 8(ish) hours and that at a slow steady pace. :-)

    1. Hi Lois. SO glad you got some rain too!! I have to admit, I did take lots of breaks Thursday, and I paced myself otherwise, but I had the same drive as you -- get stuff out! Rain's a'comin' LOL (And hope we both get some more over the next couple of days.)

I don't think I'll do that much work in one day again, though. I'm feeling my limitations. It' a b!tch getting old. *groan*

Do you blog? Would love to visit...

    2. No blog for me. Not sure I could handle it. :-) (that is why I choose anonymous when I come here)
Had our plant swap on Saturday and the rain let up for it, but we have been getting it off and on ever since. Another big downpour happening as I sit here. I love not having to water! :-)

  4. Funny how a rain can rejuvenate us as well as the plants!

We got 1.5 inches over a two day period and we were thrilled.

ll hours! You put me to shame.

    1. I put you to shame? Oh no, Glenda. What I about did was put ME into TRACTION! Never again. I'm too old for this stuff anymore.

We've had no rain since then and now it's bone dry around here. :-( I'm trying to rain dance....

  5. Dontcha just love how that rain looks on the blacktop! We got rain during the night last night, it felt like we were getting a lot, but 3/4" on the rain gauge this morning. And a couple of nights ago we got what our weather station said was only 1/4" but according to our measurements, we got closer to an inch. It's wonderful to get rain again after not having any for nearly a month, isn't it?

    1. Last year I never had to water - in fact I had to BAIL a couple of times. This year is nasty, hot and dry. More like what you had last year when all your plants dried up.
