Resonance

Do you have a part of your garden that just strikes you.  A place that, for some indefinable reason (lighting, location, content, line, something) resonates within you and you respond emotionally?

While I have enjoyed all my views over the years, something happened last Fall.  Remember when Craig and I transfered Mom's raised beds to my place (soil and all)? (click HERE)

The selected location (1st pic) was never anything special, just convenient - and empty.  I never really wanted raised beds, but I DID want to keep Mom from all the work (up a hill) she did to garden in them.  So I absconded with the whole shebang and grassed over that area of her lawn.

Craig and I made 3 beds out of Mom's 2 long ones.  A utility project for sure.

Then, something happened.  Even with nothing in them, even without plans for contents, something happened.  From where I stood to take the 2nd photo - something resonated.  For no good reason.  I could stand there and look at that view and JUST FEEL GOOD.  Thoughts of bills, Mom, weather, health, golfers - you name it, it was gone.  Nuthin.  It was almost like when you strain to hear some faraway enchanting music.

Wow.  What was THAT all about.   It didn't feel like deja vu - there was no feeling of familiarity.  But it was visceral.

Early this year I was very very ill.  In May N. moved my large rhubarb plants into the bottom-most bed.  Then, early in July during a lull in symptoms,  I had 12-18 extra zin plants so just plunked them into the other 2 beds.  No plan.  Just didn't want to toss the zins onto the compost.

Then I got to feeling better.  Meanwhile the zins did well - not eaten by the deer.

By August I was mowing occasionally and the first time I came around the bottom of the ring bed, past the white pines, I practically froze at the view.  I think I sat there on the mower, still, just looking at this line, this sweep, this ... view.  It grabbed me so and I DON'T KNOW WHY!

Honestly, the pic doesn't do it justice.  Maybe it's why we have so many art galleries, music, etc.  Some are drek.  Some are good.  Some, however, for whatever reason, hits you personally and can't be explained.

Anyway, this spot is strange and all I can do is appreciate it. Someday I'll take someone else back there and see if there is any reaction.   Probably not.   Silly, huh?

How about you? Do your gardens have magic too?

  1. I wish my gardens had a tenth as much magic as yours do----but eventually I'll get there. I do love the area by my little shed, though I have NOTHING planted there. There are several Ironwood trees, and it's shady. I finally dug up a little bed around the shed and am going to fill it next spring with Foxglove, Delphiniums , and other "cottage-y" plants. Maybe that will help it.

  2. Hi Sue. Thanks for the compliment, but (and I mean this in the best possible way).... are you freaking crazy? I READ your blog. I SEE your beds, your gardens, your flowers and paths and outdoor art, etc etc etc. You're saying THAT's not magic? Have you no idea just how many hints, tips and layouts I swipe, uh, borrow from your posts? LOL

I think sheds make great canvases for gardens - I think it's the cozy factor. Looking forward to seeing what you'll do by your shed since it's obviously trying to get your attention. :-D

  3. I like that area and those beds too! Actually, I feel that way almost anywhere in my yard and it certainly isn't because of great beds or landscaping. Gardening always makes me forget everything except what I am doing. I do have little areas that especially please me at how they have come together...usually by accident.

I am glad to hear you are feeling so much better and appreciating all your hard work.

    1. Had to laugh (...usually by accident). Oh how I can relate to that. It's usually the well-thought-out stuff that fails while the 'oh, here - stay and I'll get back to you next year' usually really surprises.

Yeah, I'm feeling better, doing projects (projects/chef pages) and able to enjoy the gardens, etc. again. I'll do up a post with a health roundup soon. Meanwhile, looking forward to more entries on YOUR blog! :-D

  4. I have spots in my garden that I just love. I just look around and think, "I can't believe I made all this". It's so peaceful and relaxing, especially when the light hits it just right. No one else ever has to "get it', which makes it all the more special. :o)
