Dodging Octavia?

Was only -10F this morning, but now it's a balmy -5F.

Brrrrrr.

Neptune is still deep on the driveway until later today when it will get cleaned off.  Meanwhile, just to the south of us, the monster Octavia is wreaking havoc.  We here can only hope that it doesn't drift further north else we'll be walloped with heavy southern snow.

I look out this morning to watch the birds at the makeshift feeder just outside the sunroom patio door.  (After all, I still can't open the breezeway door due to drifting.)  I see smoke from several neighbors' fire going already this early.

I won't be joining them.  I know from past experience really frigid days aren't good for me to have a burn.  This house isn't 'tight' and a fire would only pull in cold air from the basement, the attic, and any other crack or seam.  Oh sure the fire would make the living room almost 70F, but the rest of the main floor drops temp-wise accordingly.  Nope, when it's grey and gloomy and bitter cold, I opt for a more sedate 'burn' for a cheery sparkle.

How about you?  Hunkered in right now?  Or busy digging out?

  1. Just got in from a walk. Though it's well below zero, there is no wind, and that makes it fine for a long walk. I think I gained 5 pounds this week being "hunkered in". Felt so good to get out again.

    1. I know of days like that - brilliant blue skies, no wind, below zero. Great days for bringing in firewood, feeding the birds or just walking around. Crystal. Not so much here today: breezy, gloomy but... NOTHING FALLING OUT OF THE SKY. :-D

  2. It's cold and snowy here but I don't mind it. I prefer a good storm to wretched grey blahness. I have seeds under lights in the basement and lots of winter sowing on the patio. This too shall pass. :o)

    1. Long range says more of the same (deep cold, snow) until end of the month, then March looks mild. Let's see if they know what they're talking about! Right now I'd give a couple bucks for some grey blahness! LOL

  3. Yesterday wasn't too bad here but today will be a different story. We aren't burning the wood stove for the same reason.....the living room will be cozy but the thermostat is located in that area so the furnace doesn't come on.........also we like to have some heat from the ducts under the floors. We are keeping the water pipes dripping during the night.

    1. Since I have been taping up ducts (heat runs and cold returns), the main floor is much better, even heat. I know it's working, the basement used to be 63 and now it's 59 - less heat leakage down there. When it gets into 20-30s, I'll have some nice fires. Thankfully my water lines are pretty protected. Hope you fare well through your cold spell.
