Oh gosh it's COLD

Only 15F this morning! Good grief. I knew it was going to get cold, though. Yesterday it barely got out of freezing (even though bright and sunny) and by 2:00 pm the birdbath started freezing over again and was solid by 4:00.  A bitter north wind sure didn't make things better.

The garden jeans made it to the end, but only just.  Toward the last I stopped sewing on the patches and used pins and Gorilla tape to help keep the dirt/leaves out. LOL  These will be retired.  The back of the legs are still nice and will become next year's patches.

The B&B salvia have held up to low temps, but I'm sure they will eventually succumb. (Yep, totally toasted this morning.)  The Veronica (blue bomb), however still blooms and will stay evergreen over the winter.

The deer shredded the last butterfly bush (Pink Delight) in the ring bed last night.  They stripped the main stem down to pith.  I hate those damn vermin.

Meanwhile, I am warm and toasty inside the house (thanks to all that work I did to my furnace heat ducts and cold air returns early this year  CLICK HERE).  Also warm and toasty inside me thanks to a freezer full of veg broth, frozen beans, turkey & chicken stock and lots of cubed meat for soups.

Another frozen turkey is thawing in the fridge and will be roasted up on Wednesday.  Friends down for the holiday on Thursday.  Then on Saturday my Mom and her brother here for leftovers.  Weather will 'warm' up through Friday so travel should not be anyone's issue.

Hope all get to spend time with friends and loved ones over Thanksgiving.  That's the best part of the holiday.  Enjoy.

  1. I've had a hard time getting butterfly bushes really established and looking good after the last two winters did them in. I've got one in, and gaining some size, but silly me put it on the side of the house where I rarely see it. :-( The others I tried planting in more noticeable spots just fizzled out.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!!

    1. Hey there, Jeff. My butterfly bushes self-seed a lot and I have to pull some out every year. The only non-purpura that seeded was a white profusion and since I didn't like the parent plant I pulled out the seedling. Keep butterfly bushes at end of season is my problem - the deer.

  2. It really is hard to get use to the cold. We were told that the 6 inch coating of snow makes it worse as it keeps the air temps colder than what it really is. I am seeing the last of my green things being green now. I missed getting my dahlias out of the ground. I don't think the soil is that frozen yet so maybe tomorrow I will see what happened to them. Take care and enjoy the turkey with all the family.

    1. Boy howdy you're right. These frigid temps are nasty and the wind is terrible. We didn't get any snow and even though the radar has had blue over us for a couple of hours, nary a flake here. Hope you get those dahlias up. Stay warm. Happy Thanksgiving to you too. :-D

  3. Hello, Kris. I came over from John's place. You must be a bit more north; it's cold here, but no snow. I'm about to go out, in a totally inadequate hoodie, which is the only garment that fits over my broken arm.
We have more than our share of deer, here in the national park. They only went in my flower garden once, to eat daffodils. From observing, I realized the front flower garden is not on their trail, except they do detour for daffodils. Their trail goes right along the vegetable garden, and God help any bean that is not behind a seven foot fence.

    1. Hello, Joanne, and welcome! I'm in Canton so I don't know which direction from you I am. Sooo sorry to learn of your broken arm. There is just no 'good' time for such an injury (growing season? cleanup season? holiday season? etc....). Hope you are mending well.

As for daffodils - must be a local cuisine. My daffs are about the ONLY thing they give it a pass! No trail here - they just just consider the place a buffet. Throw something on over that hoodie my girl. Keep warm out there.
