Still best buds

These two squirrels (1 black, 1 grey) were raised by a black female in summer, 2010 and have never left each other's side since then. Here's a link to the original post.

They spent the long frigid 2010-11 winter together, then all this last summer, and are still best buds to this day.

They run, scramble, wrestle, share food and seem to find great comfort in each other.

Perhaps other squirrels have best buds, but it's difficult to tell.  This pair really stand out though and I look for them every day.

Meanwhile, down in the basement, there are other things to look for every day now.

  1. Interesting! In Kent, where there's tons of black and gray squirrels, the two varieties/colors never seem to get along. The black squirrels are known for being more aggressive and attacking the gray squirrels. I wonder if yours are siblings and there's some recessive gene stuff going on, or if one is adopted? LOL

Starting seeds already!?!? I'm impressed! Whatchya got growing!?

    1. Jeph - I'm quite sure the grey was adopted. Here the greys, blacks and fox squirrels get along great. Even the red squirrel is tolerated (the most belligerent of them all). Click the pic to see what's growing.

  2. I have never heard of wild animals adopting that way.

How neat that you have been able to follow them from birth.

    1. Birds adopt any egg dropped into their nests. There are lots of cases where cats have nursed/adopted bunnies, a crow adopted a kitten, and so many stories that I'm not surprised the grey squirrel baby found a home with the blacks. Just fills the heart, no?

  3. I enjoyed reading your post and the comments. Our squirrels do some playing, but they also sometimes fight.

    1. Oh, there is a lot of scuffling, chasing, posturing, etc. and it's fascinating to watch the interaction. Did you know that black squirrels are really grey squirrels with different coloring?
